Fanfares for the Head of the Charles Regatta

Fanfares for the Head of the Charles Regatta

for Trumpet in Eb (or Piccolo Trumpet in Bb), 2 Trumpets in Bb and Alto Trumpet in F

(2008) (varies)

These fanfares were written at the request of and to specifications given by Lawrence Cabot, head of the committee running the Regatta.  A specified number of awards were to be given at each ceremony, though several groups were expected to not show up to the ceremonies and would have their awards sent to them.  This gave me a general idea of how many fanfares would be needed for each ceremony but not an exact count.  A prelude and postlude were also requested for each ceremony.  In order to tie each fanfare together both within each ceremony and throughout the Regatta, the tonalities of the three sets of fanfares themselves outline the same major triad that the third and final fanfare is based around.  As I did not know the exact number of fanfares needed but wanted to tie them together motivically, I devised some simple ground rules for the players that allow them to choose different paths through the fanfares each time.
